We regret to announce the passing of Fred L. "Smokey" Gibbons, age 87, of Donalsonville, GA who passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at his residence. Funeral services for Mr. Gibbons will be held on Friday, April 8, 2005 at 2:00 PM at the Chapel of Evans-Skipper Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Barineau and the Rev. Morgan Whitfield officiating. Interment will follow in Friendship Cemetery in Donalsonville. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening, April 7, 2005 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Chapel of Evans-Skipper Funeral Home. Mr. Gibbons was born in Seminole County on January 16, 1918 to the late Ira Elsie and Jessie Kelly Gibbons. He married Margaret Steadham on March 18, 1939. She preceded him in death on Oct. 2, 2002. He was a general contractor and woodworker. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served as the Mayor of Donalsonville in 1990 and Mayor Pro-tem since 1991. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Smokey was truly his happiest when he was creating something from a piece of lumber, fishing, or spending time with his family. Mr. Gibbons leaves to cherish his memory one son, Chris Gibbons and his wife Betty of Thomson, GA; three daughters, Gayle Swan and her husband Bob of Wrens, GA, Marsha Bond and her husband Ed of Donalsonville, GA, and Donna Moye and her husband John of Donalsonville, GA; 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, as well as 1 more great grandchild that is on the way.
