BETTY MARTIN UNDERWOOD

October 20, 1924 — October 29, 2022

Betty Martin Underwood, age 98, of Alpharetta, GA passed away Saturday morning, Oct. 29, 2022, at Northside Hospital Forsyth. Graveside services for Mrs. Underwood will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022, at 11:30 AM at Friendship Cemetery in Donalsonville, GA with Rev. James Scarborough officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service. Mrs. Underwood was born in Ashford, AL on Oct. 20, 1924, to Leon William Martin and Anne Hollingsworth Martin. The family moved to Donalsonville, GA in 1926 where her father was station master for the railroad. After graduating Seminole County High School, she earned a Bachelors of Education Degree from the University of Alabama. She taught elementary grades for many years in Jacksonville, Florida and Lake City, Florida. Betty was a true Alabama fan, watching games until the very end. She dearly loved her family and friends, and in turn she was loved and cherished by them. Mrs. Underwood was a member of First Baptist Church of Donalsonville, GA. She leaves to cherish her memory, her nieces, Anne Trawick and her husband Dee of Iron City, GA, Susan Shingler Hambrick of Canton, GA, Jennie Simmons of Charlotte, NC, and Peggy Shingler Kwilecki and her husband Gerard of Bainbridge, GA; her nephews, Marty Shingler of Donalsonville, GA, Ted Shingler and his wife Paula of Donalsonville, GA, David Gray and his wife Ginny of Brisbane, Australia, and Leonard Martin and his wife Chris of Lakeland, FL; her great nieces, Teri Ann Simmons and her husband Maurits Coppenrath of Atlanta, GA, Kimberly Williams of Canton, GA, Libby Williams Brown and her husband Tim of Canton, GA, , Michelle S. Everett and her husband Greg of Atlanta, GA, Celia S. Weir and her husband Sam of Donalsonville, GA, and Mary Margaret S. Hyatt and her husband Doug of Myrtle Beach, SC, and her great nephews, Martin Shingler and his wife Shanna of Jesup, GA, Trey Trawick and his wife Amy of Iron City, GA, Rusty Trawick and his wife Leslie of Iron City, GA, and Paul E. Shingler, III and his wife Sara of Atlanta, GA. Numerous great- great nieces and nephews also survive. Mrs. Underwood was preceded in death by her parents, Leon William Martin and Anne Hollingsworth Martin; her husband Paul Edward Underwood; her siblings, Erlene Simmons, Leonard Martin, Sr., Elsie Shingler, Grace Gray Sullivan, and Jean Rushing; as well as two nephews, M.T. Simmons and Paul E. Shingler, Jr.
