Mr. Horton was born in Ahoskie, NC on February 13, 1932, to George Stanley Horton and Lillian Elizabeth Carter Horton. He served his country in the United States Air Force. After his discharge from the Air Force, Mr. Horton became a truck driver. He retired from East Coast Trailer Sales and moved to Georgia in 1999 and returned to work driving a tractor-trailer until his second retirement from Thomas Truck Lines. “Mr. Gil”, as he was known, loved driving his truck to the fuel depot around 3:00 AM to begin his day. He covered numerous Georgia highways while listening to his beloved country music on the radio. Phantom 309 was a favorite trucking song of his, making it a favorite of the family as well.
He was a patient and trusting man, trusting Dr. Sydney Cochran not only as his doctor but as one of his many best friends. However, most importantly, he believed in and trusted “the Good Lord”.
Mr. Horton leaves to cherish his memory, his son, Gilbert “Chip” Stanford Horton, Jr. of Donalsonville, GA; two granddaughters, Destiny Elizabeth Horton and Danielle Isabelle Horton; his daughter, Mary Roxanne Lonski and husband Paul of New London, North Carolina; his brother, Carol Dale Horton and wife, Peggy of Suffolk, Virginia; his sister, Phyllis Marie Horton Warren and husband John of Morehead City, North Carolina; and his brother-in-law, Donald W. Parker, Sr. of Donalsonville, GA. Also surviving are dear friends, Ms. Gloria McCann of Bainbridge, GA and Ms. Dorothy Worden of Donalsonville, GA, as well as many cousins, nephews, nieces, and many more who called him Grandpa and friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Stanley Horton and Lillian Elizabeth Carter Horton; his wife, Iris June Jones Horton; his brothers, James Earl Horton and Daniel Carter Horton; and an infant daughter.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in memory of Mr. Horton to the American Heart Association or just donate a cup of coffee for the next trucker you come across on the highways and byways.
