Jean Preston

Jean Preston, age 84, of Rome, GA and formerly of Donalsonville, GA passed away Sunday morning, August 28, 2022. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Evans-Skipper Funeral Home with Mark Preston officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Doris Jean (Bridges) Preston was born 11/5/1937 in Donalsonville Hospital to Herbert Coachman Bridges and Doris Starling Bridges (Mimi). She graduated SCHS in 1955 and Valdosta State College in 1958 with a degree in Secretarial Science. After graduation she worked in Bainbridge, Ga, Pensacola, FL, and at various other stops. She married James Burwyn Preston in 1962. They had two boys, Scott and Mark. As Burwyn was an Air Force Master Sergeant they lived all over the world (Portsmouth NH, Columbus MS, Denver Co, Guam, Okinawa Japan) until retirement in 1974 at which time they moved with their boys back to their hometown of Donalsonville, Ga. Jean was a devoted wife, mother, and friend to many. She always had a word of encouragement for anyone and everyone. She loved the Lord and taught Sunday School and other Bible studies throughout her entire life. Jean was also the author of two books. Jean spent the last 4 years in Rome, Ga and loved her friends at the Renaissance Marquis. She often stated, “If you aren’t laughing at least once a day, you aren’t doing something right”. She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Mark Preston of Athens Ga, her son Scott Preston and his wife Jennifer of Rome, Ga, her grand-daughter Emily Preston of Rome, Ga, her grand-son Jackson Preston of Rome, Ga, her sister Beverly Wheat and Bev’s husband Warren of Lexington, Ky, and E.C. Bridges of Donalsonville, Ga. Additionally she is survived by many, many cherished nieces and nephews in Texas (children and grand-children of her Sister Sue Holman), cousins, nieces, and nephews in Tallahassee FL (the Starling descendants, the Chances), Henry Herndon (Scott’s father-in-law), Jeff Herndon, Randi Preston, and many other relatives in southwest Alabama. Mrs Preston was preceded in death by her parents, the aforementioned Herbert and Doris Bridges, her husband James Burwyn Preston, her sister Sue Bridges Holman, and her twin brothers Johnny and Donnie Bridges, and her nephew Buckston Logan Bridges (Buck). Also preceding her in death was her brother in law Irving Lamar Preston and Obie Joan Herndon ( Scott’s mother-in-law).
