Myrtle Smith

August 10, 1929 — June 17, 2022

Mrs. Myrtle Jean Smith was a blessing to her parents Tom and Susie Newberry on August 10, 1929 and returned home to her Lord on June 17, 2022. At 92, she lived a long, productive life and inspired more people than she could ever imagine in the small town of Donalsonville, Georgia. Being a telephone operator, farmer’s wife, mother, business owner, and childcare provider along with her husband filled the days of her life. "Miss Myrtle" not only provided burgers and ice cream to those who were patrons of the Dairy Bar restaurant, she also gave many the opportunity to have their first job behind those counters resulting in lifelong friendships. "Granny Myrtle" truly thrived on helping in the raising of all of her grands, as well as those who were in her home childcare. “Mama” always loved her girls and loved them well. Carrying on her traditions will help keep her spirit alive in those whose lives she touched. Whether you shared a meal at her table or joined her on the porch in a rocking chair on Faubus Drive, you were treated with love and respect. Her legacy is her unconditional love, warm welcoming hugs, and the ability to make you laugh and feel right at home. May all who loved her carry on those ideals that she held high. On June 17th she was certainly greeted with “Well done, My good and faithful servant, well done.” Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughters Susan (Ray) Peterson; Alicia (David) Gordon; Shelia Roth; grandchildren Jeremy (Whitney) Peterson; Gena (Lee) Jordan; Dennis (Tia) Whisenant; Anna Whisenant; Amber (Lucas) Davis; Jada (Bob) Davies; Kelsey (Andrew) Willette; Shelby Gordon; great-grand children Jared (Anslie) Peterson; Rayna (Brandon) Peterson; Amber (Tyler) Varner; Raylee Jordan; Riley, Connor, and Katie Whisenant; Camden and Cal Fulford; Mason, Alexis, and Kirsten Davis; Brantley Downing; Marcus Davies; Owen, Andy, and Jax Willette; great-great grandchildren Irelyn Peterson; Ben and Blake Carter. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband Dewey C. Smith; daughter, Rita Smith Allgood; sons-in-law Zachery Whisenant, Terry Allgood, and Keith Roth. A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 20 at the chapel of Evans-Skipper Funeral Home at 11:00AM with visitation at 10:00AM with Reverend James Scarborough officiating. Flowers or donations to Agape Care Group at 303 East Shotwell Street Bainbridge, GA 39828 with checks payable to the Serenity Foundation may be given to honor “Granny Myrtle.”” A special thank you to the staff of Seminole Manor and Daisy Tarver for loving her like family.
