January 12, 1931 — June 7, 2024

Donalsonville

Rafael Vazquez Rivera, age 93, passed away peacefully Friday, June 7, 2024, at home in Donalsonville.

Rafael was born January 12, 1931, in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, the fourth child of Arcilio Vazquez and Eusebia Rivera.  He was raised in Morovis, Puerto Rico where he attended school through the sixth grade, before leaving school to work in the fields on his father’s land.  In 1952, he obtained his first pair of shoes and ventured to New York City, which he decided, was not the place for him.  From New York, he made his way to Campbell, OH to work in the steel mills.   He was a longtime member of First Spanish Baptist Church in Youngstown, OH, and retired from The Campbell Works of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube.

Rafael was united in marriage with Lydia Quiroga on June 18, 1955 at First Spanish Baptist Church, a faith-filled, strong and loving union that lasted more than 67 years until her death on May 15, 2023.  Together they raised their family in Campbell, later retiring to Orlando, FL, Morovis, PR, and Donalsonville, GA.  He loved being outside, growing fruits, vegetables, flowers and plants, playing Dominoes and Rummykub to keep his mind sharp and especially spending time with his family.

Rafael is survived by his children, Benjamin (Maryellen) and Yvette (Michael Rice) with whom he made his home; sisters, Carmen Maria and Natividad; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, who lovingly called him “Tio”, as well as cousins, church family, and friends.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Juan, Francisca, Ramon, Ecedro, Feliciana, Angel Manuel, Jacinto, Francisco and Juana.

Memorial services to honor Mr. Rafael’s life will be held at Iron City Baptist Church on Friday, June 14, 2024, at 10:00 AM.
